"4th Place" delves into the life of Gwang Soo, a once-promising teenage swimmer whose journey was derailed by profound overconfidence and a subsequent dismissal by his violent coach. This led Gwang Soo to abandon the sport entirely. Years later, his path has circled back, now working as a swimming instructor, carrying the weight of his past.
The narrative shifts to Joon Ho, an elementary school boy perpetually finishing 4th in swimming competitions, a consistent outcome that exasperates his mother. Desperate for a breakthrough, she begins searching for a dedicated personal trainer. Her search ultimately leads her to Gwang Soo. This sets the stage for a compelling dynamic where Gwang Soo must confront his own history of unfulfilled potential and the consequences of his arrogance, while endeavoring to guide Joon Ho past his frustrating streak of nearly-there finishes. It's a poignant exploration of mentorship, overcoming past failures, and the relentless pursuit of improvement, transcending the simple act of competition.
